Kenya: Man killed by officers ‘searching for phone’

A 29-year-old man was killed by police officers in his house in Tigania East, Meru County on Tuesday.

The victim’s brother brother Dennis Mutei said the officers shot his brother in the stomach. “He was taken to hospital but died on arrival,” he said.

In an interview with Nation.co.ke, Mr Mutei asked the Director of Public Prosecutions to intervene. “My brother had no problem with anybody,” Mr Mutei said.

Tigania East OCPD Samuel Kosgei said the officers were looking for a stolen phone when Kaaria attacked them with a machete.

“He took a panga(machete) and threatened to kill the officers, in the process one of the officers shot him in the stomach. He was rushed to Meru Level Five Hospital,” Mt Kosgei said.

The police boss said investigations to establish what really happened were underway.

“The matter is now with a Divisional Criminal Investigations officer,” he said.
