Uganda: Police officer, three others die in Mabira accident

BUIKWE. Four people including a police officer have died while 13 others were seriously injured in an accident that  happened in Mabira forest on Saturday morning.

Ssezibwa Regional  Police  Spokesperson Ms  Hellen Butoto  said  the incident happened  at around 1am.

The accident involved a coaster registration number UBD 343P from Kampala to Jinja  and a trailer T643DNU/T841D from the opposite direction.

Ms Butoto  said  the  driver of the coaster was trying to overtake without checking whether there was an oncoming vehicle. Unfortunately this resulted in a head-on collision.

She said  among the deceased  was a police officer  identified as Mr Andrew Matampa attached to Katwe Police Station in Kampala who pronounced dead on arrival at Jinja Regional Referral  Hospital.

Ms Butoto said  the  three  dead bodies  which  are yet to be identified are in Kawolo hospital mortuary and that of their own officer is in Jinja hospital mortuary.

Ms Bototo  added that  the 13 injured  passengers are receiving treatment at Jinja hospital.
