Uganda: One killed, eight arrested in separate city robbery incidents

A suspected thief has been shot dead and eight others arrested in  three separate robbery incidents in Kampala.

Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesman, Mr Luke Owoyesigyire said that the suspected thief was shot by a security guard attached to Protection Security Company, while trying to break into a shop in Kikajjo Zone, Namasuba, near Kampala.

The suspect was identified as Junior Agaba, 18, a former street child. His three accomplices escaped.

“Agaba was breaking into a shop with three others who escaped after he was shot. This incident happened on Sunday morning at around 3 a.m,” Mr Owoyesigyire said.

He said that on Mengo Hill Road, at about 1:30 am, a Flying Squad Unit police officer sighted thieves and alerted  patrol police officers.

The officers, according to Mr Owoyesigyire found the thieves who had broken into a hardware shop, loading iron sheets onto a white Isuzu truck Reg. No. UAZ 332J.

“The suspects were arrested at the scene and are detained at the Central Police Station in Kampala,” Mr Owoyesigyire said.

In a related incident, Mr Owoyesigyire said, five people were arrested while breaking into shops at Ivory Plaza in the city centre have been detained.
