NAIROBI, Kenya — At least three boats capsized off Kenya’s coast on Saturday morning, leaving dozens missing and prompting a large-scale rescue operation amid treacherous sea conditions.
The incidents occurred in Kilifi and Lamu counties, just hours after the Kenya Meteorological Department issued warnings about strong winds and large waves along the coastline.
The Kenya Red Cross reported that the capsizes took place at Vidazini and Mnarani in Kilifi County, and Mutuni in Lamu County. Several people have been rescued, but search efforts continue as rough waters hamper operations.
Rescue teams from the Kenya Coast Guard, Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA), Beach Management Units (BMUs), and county governments are involved in the ongoing efforts.
The Kenya Meteorological Department had forecasted strong southerly winds exceeding 35 knots (18.0 m/s) and wave heights over two meters from May 23 to May 25.
In response, Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sherrif Nassir ordered a two-day closure of public beaches and suspended all marine and ocean-related activities, including fishing and water sports.
Despite these warnings, some vessels ventured out, a decision attributed by local officials to economic pressures and lax enforcement of maritime safety regulations.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with teams providing offshore response, medical evaluations, and lifeguard services.
The Kenya Red Cross emphasized the challenges posed by the rough sea conditions but affirmed their commitment to locating the missing individuals.
Authorities urge residents and maritime operators to heed weather advisories and prioritize safety to prevent further tragedies.
