Kampala- The Director General of Internal Security Organisation (ISO), Col Kaka Bagyenda, yesterday said investigations into the murder of former police spokesperson Felix Kaweesi will be concluded soon.
Col Bagyenda declined to reveal how many suspects have been arrested or whether the security were getting clues that would lead to arrest of more suspects.
He only said ISO and Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) have been jointly investigating the murder since August last year.
“I have been reading some misleading stories in the media since the weekend. But we shall soon finalise the investigations and will hand over [the suspects] to police for prosecution,” Col Bagyenda said.
He also remained cagey on claims that the murder was an inside scheme within the police ranks.
“That remains an allegation I have been reading in the media until proved otherwise,” Col Bagyenda said.
The army and defence spokesperson, Brig Richard Karemire, did not give much on the progress of the investigations either.
“We continue to work together to detect and curtail crime. Where crime is committed like the case of AIGP Kaweesi, the security forces have continued to work together to make sure the suspects face the long hand of the law,” he said.
The police spokesperson, Mr Emilian Kayima, declined to comment on information that senior police officers are being investigated by ISO and CMI after they were implicated in the Kaweesi murder.
“I can only make a comment on this matter after I have been briefed accordingly,” he said.
Col Bagyenda refused to comment on Christine Mbabazi Muhoza, the woman who is alleged to have vital information about Kaweesi’s death.
Kaweesi and his bodyguard Kenneth Erau and driver Godfrey Mambewa were shot dead by armed assailants on March 17, 2017 in Kulambiro suburb, Kampala. The assailants escaped on motorcycles.
Suspects
At least 20 suspects have so far been arrested and charged with Kaweesi’s murder. They are Asuman Mugoya, Ali Mugoya, Shafik Kasujja, Sinaan Hibwangi, Abdullah Kaala, Swale Kimuli, Sauda Ayub, Kimuli Luutu, Ibrahim Ssemwanga, Abdu Rashid Mbaziira, Mohammed Buyondo, Aramazan Higenyi Noor Bin, Yusuf Mugerwa, Bruhan Balyajusa.
Others are Umar Maganda Aramathan, Ahamadan Senfuka Shaban, Hassan Tumusiime, Ibrahim Kiisa, Osman Mohammed Omarete, Hamidu Magambo, Abdu Majid Ojerere, Joshua Kyambadde and Musa Ntende.
