Rwanda’s Kagame in Congo for regional summit

RWANDA PRESIDENTIAL PRESS UNIT(FRED)

KIGALI –  President Paul Kagame yesterday was the only president who attended the Heads of State and Government of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo.

Other East African presidents were represented by their ministers or vice presidents. President Museveni was represented by his Vice Edward Ssekandi.

Museveni is currently in norther Uganda campaigning for the controversial 2017 Land Amendment Bill which is facing resistance from the population because it seeks compulsory acquisition of land by government.

John Magufuli was represented by Augustine Mahiga. President Uhuru Kenyatta who is preparing for presidential election repeat next week didn’t attend.

Pierre Nkurunziza of Burundi and Salva Kiir of South Sudan also didn’t attend.

 According to the statement issued by the ICGRL secretariat, the summit was held under the theme “Fast-Tracking Implementation of the Pact to Facilitate Stability and Development in the Great Lakes Region”.

The meeting reviewed the political and security situation in the region.

President Denis Sassou Nguesso, the incoming Chairperson and the host of the Summit paid tribute to the outgoing Chairperson of ICGLR, H.E. João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço of the Republic of Angola and the immediate Former President H.E. Jose Eduardo dos Santos, for having provided “excellent leadership” to the region during his tenure.
