Uganda: Police arrest 8 over mobile money robbery

Kampala. Police yesterday announced that they have arrested at least eight suspects in the recent mobile money robberies and killings registered in four weeks in different districts.

Police also said five suspects, who were targeting Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisations (Saccos), have been apprehended.

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said robberies targeting mobile money operators and Saccos were registered between February 12 and March 7 in the districts of Wakiso, Busia, Mbale, Masaka, Kalungu and Mbarara in which two mobile money operators were shot dead while four others are nursing wounds.

Mr Enanga cited numerous incidents in which the Flying Squad Unit (FSU) has tracked down armed thugs.

The FSU at the weekend conducted an operation in Mbarara District where it killed one and arrested five suspected thugs.

Police revealed that its operatives tracked and cracked down a criminal gang operating in Ankole Sub-region especially in the areas of Rwizi and Greater Bushenyi regions in Nyakaizi Cell, Kakoba Division.

Mr Enanga said in Masaka and Lyantonde districts, a Sacco was robbed of Shs380m but police have so far recovered only Shs24m.

“We advise mobile money operators to stop carrying huge sums of money and use internet banking. They should also avoid exposing their records books,” he said.
