Kampala, Uganda- A court in the capital Kampala, on Monday sentenced Kawempe South Member of Parliament (MP) Mubarak Munyagwa Serunga alias “Mugaatigwa Bata” to six months in prison for failure to pay sh100 million he owes one John Baptist Maali.
Munyagwa was arrested and taken to court by Alpha Court Bailiffs and was sent to Luzira by Florence Nassuna, the registrar in court’s execution division.
MPMunyagwa’s troubles started from a reported failure to give vacant possession to a piece of land he sold to Maali in 2015. Maali claims that he requested Munyagwa to refund his money but in vain.
Maali alleged that Munyagwa through his agent, one MeddieBasajja, approached him saying he was interested in selling his land at Kyadondo Block 205, Plot 509 atKawempe measuring 0.316 hectares.
Munyagwa then Kawempe Municipality division mayor, reportedly confirmed to Maali that land in question was his and that he bought it from one SentongoBakali and he was processing its title from Kampala District Land Board.
Maali contends that after Munyagwa’s assurance that the land in question belongs to him, they made a sale agreement which was witnessed by Munyagwa’s lawyer Joseph Kyazze and his agent MeddieBasajja.
He then paid sh100 million to Munyagwa , who promised to vacate the land and also give him transfer forms to process the land title. Court was informed that despite remainders Munyagwa has failed to honour his obligations and he was therefore sent to prison as he still find ways to pay back the money.
MP Mubarak Munyagwa is one of the highest ranking critics of Uganda’s president Museven.
He has been seen on several occasions in running battles with police over processions aimed at criticizing the president.

As he boarded a prison bus to Luzira, Munyagwa,he flashed his FDC party’s V-sign.
Maali warned the public not to enter in deals with MP “I warn you people not to deal with Munyagwa, he is a fraudster. I have decided to spend more money on buying food that will keep him in Luzira prison until he pays back my money” Maali told the media after court ruling.
