One person was shot dead in Siaya town as residents protested against President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election on Friday night.
Residents poured into the streets as soon as IEBC declared Uhuru the winner for the presidential race.
They chanted anti-Uhuru slogans and engaged in running battles for most of the night until early Saturday.
Several vehicles and a petrol station were also torched on Saturday morning.
Despite heavy downpour, residents in Kisumu also held protests following IEBC’s announcement.
Wailing could be heard in most neighbourhoods as protesters engaged in running battles with police in Manyatta, Kondele, Obungo, Migosi, Nyalenda and even close to the Kisumu International Airport.
Residents accused police of using excessive force, saying police fired live bullets and tear gas canisters.
Association chair Audi Ogada said three youths are set to undergo surgery for gunshot wounds.
“I am on my way to the [Jaramogi Oginga] county hospital to confirm the same and will update you once there,” he told The Star on phone.
Sounds of gunshots have rent the air for much of the night and Saturday morning as police disperse youths.
Roads have also been barricaded with burning tires and stones, paralysing transport in both regions.
DEATH AT UHURU CELEBRATION
In Molo town, a man was crushed by a lorry as residents celebrated Uhuru’s win.
The man identified as Okoth tried to hang on to a lorry but missed and fell on the tarmac, after which it ran over him.
Okoth is said to have been drunk at the time of the accident.
“He was about 27 years old and worked as a cook at Molo police station,” John Ng’ang’a, a resident, said.
Ng’ang’a faulted police absence during celebrations for the accident.
“People were hanging recklessly on vehicles and even wheels. Police should have been here to control the crowds,” he said.
Ben Kamau said they were forced to stop the celebrations after the incident.
“We had warned the youth about hanging on the lorries and vehicles but they did not listen.
Molo base commander Moses Nderitu asked residents to be careful and celebrate in moderation.
Okoth’s body was taken to Molo subcounty mortuary.
