More El Gezira Farmers Association members summoned in Sudan

Agents of the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) have summoned another leading member of El Gezira and El Managil Farmers Association.

On Sunday afternoon, NISS officers in in El Hasahisa in El Gezira summoned Abdelraouf Omar to their office. He was detained and transferred to the state capital, Wad Madani.

During the past 72 hours, five leaders of the El Gezira and El Managil Farmers Association were questioned by security agents: Hasabo Ibrahim, Zeinelabdin Bargawi, Kamal El Nima, El Amin Abdelnabi, and Abdelraouf Omar.

Another leading member of the Farmers Association told Radio Dabanga on Sunday that the detentions “not only target the Association and their efforts to re-establish the Farmers Union, but seek to silence all the democratic forces”.

Member of the Farmers Alliance Secretariat Asim Kanoun told this station on Thursday that the targeting of leaders of El Gezira and El Managil Farmers Association started after the members agreed on the re-establishment of “a genuine farmers union in the region” during the El Maejeena conference in mid-October.
