Uganda: Two arrested over murder of KCCA staff

Police have arrested two people for allegedly killing a KCCA cleaner in Bwaise.

The body of the woman identified as Sarah Nakanwagi was found Saturday dumped in a drainage channel close to the Northern bypass near heritage college school in Bugalani zone, Bwaise, Kawempe division.

Speaking to this reporter, the Kampala metropolitan police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said: “Today morning we discovered a body belonging to Nakanwagi Sarah 38 years she is also a resident of Bwaise, it is alleged that she was going to work and some people waylaid her and murder her but that is yet to be determined by the postmortem,” Owoyesigyire said.

He says basing on the signs observed on ground, “We suspect it to be a murder and we are still waiting for a postmortem now.”

Owoyesigyire said the canine unit was brought to the scene and led the police to homes of two suspects who have already been arrested so that they can help with investigations.

“They are now with us, helping us with investigations. We are not yet sure if they are the prime suspects, but our dogs led us to their houses” Owoyesigyire said.

Meanwhile residents have expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation in their area.

Many argue that there are several youths who are idle and spend most of the day taking drugs and alcohol and terrorizing them in the evenings.

“We are living in fear because of these many jobless youths who keep roaming around in the area, taking marijuana and drinking alcohol,” One of the residents Godfrey Magezi said. “We ask government to help intervene because this is the third woman to be killed since the year started within the same area” he added.

“We work up to this shocking news that one of our residents from St Francis zone commonly known as Nalongo had been murdered and dumped in the trench,” another resident said.

“I feel very terrible that such an innocent woman who was only looking for survival was murdered this way. I even think she was first raped,” another female resident said.

“We know her; she is our resident here and is a KCCA cleaner who has been sweeping our roads. She has been strangled to death and dumped in this trench. Imagine she has left her very young children,” another woman said before adding “We ask that security in our zone is strengthened.”
