Museveni declares 3-day national mourning for Kiryandongo accident victims

President Yoweri Museveni has declared a three-day national mourning for the 22 people who died in a bus accident in Kiryandongo District.

Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda on Sunday said President Museveni had directed that during the three-day national mourning which starts today (May 27), all flags would fly at half-mast.

“Government will contribute Shs5 million to each family that lost their loved ones to assist in burial arrangements and Shs3 million to each of those seriously injured, who are currently undergoing treatment,” reads part of the statement issued by Dr Rugunda.

“While we await a detailed police report, initial investigations point to out over-speeding and vehicles in dangerous mechanical condition as the cause of the accident,” he added.
