Deputy Police spokesperson SP Onyango “survives” assassination

KAMPALA- Deputy Police spokesperson, SP Patrick Onyango, reportedly survived an assassination on Thursday night at Kireka Trading Centre, near Kampala, when assailants tried to grab him from a hired motorcycle on which he was riding.

Mr Onyango was reportedly moving on a boda boda at about 11 pm when men on another motorcycle, who were following him, tried to abduct him.

He was reportedly saved by his rider who sped towards a nearby group of people. As he struggled to escape, Mr Onyango fell off the motorcycle and sustained injuries.

The assailants reportedly changed direction and sped off.

Mr Onyango was taken to an unidentified health centre by police officers who arrived at the scene moments later.

Police spokesperson, Mr Emilian Kayima, in a message he shared on a media WhatsApp Forum said they were still gathering details regarding the incident and would respond to inquiries later.

On September 8, former Buyende District Police Commander, Muhammad Kirumira was shot dead by men moving on a motorcycle at Bulenga Township on the Kampala-Mubende highway.

Operatives at the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence, Internal Security Organisation and Criminal Investigations Directorate have reportedly arrested nine suspects including Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police Ismael Ssenono, who was in charge of operations at Old Kampala Police Station, over the crime.
