KAMPALA. Police will not commemorate the Uganda Police Force Day that falls on October 3 due to unclear circumstances.
The day was designated as Uganda Police Force Day in 2014 under the leadership of the former Inspector General of Police Gen Kale Kayihura to endear members of the law enforcement agencies to communities and also exhibit their capabilities.
Assistant Inspector General of Police Asan Kasingye, the police chief Political commissar, confirmed that they will not mark the Police Day this year.
“No. [It has been] postponed to next year. We have the Iranian Vice President’s visit exactly tomorrow October 3 at the Iran-Uganda Police Hospital.
There’s also parliamentary committee meeting on Human Rights tomorrow (Wednesday) and Defence and Internal Affairs on Thursday. We agreed to organize better next year,” AIGP Kasingye said when asked about the events for the day.
The Police celebrations were the equivalent of the army’s liberations Day dubbed Tarehe Sita. The police would give back to the community through its corporate social responsibility programmes for an entire week.
Civilians would be treated in police medical centres free of charge. Police officers would also carry out cleaning exercises in their neighbourhoods.
Last year, Police Day was held at Nkumba University under the theme: Connecting with communities to fight crime.
Since Mr Martins Okoth Ochola became Inspector General of Police six months ago, he has been ensuring a lean budget on police projects especially those he considers to be wasteful expenditure.
