The AU’s Peace and Security Council (PSC) issued the warning on Monday in a statement after the TMC last week overthrew former president Omar al Bashir when he ordered special security forces to open fire on civilian anti-government protesters, the Sudan Tribune reported.
While the military claimed that they had made the move to protect Sudanese civilians, their plan to cling to power for two years while attempting to form a comprehensive national government has been rejected by protesters, the international community, and regional organisations, including the AU.
The release of the statement followed in-depth discussions by the PSC during which they condemned the military coup, the suspension of Sudan’s constitution, the dissolution of its national assembly, and the formation of the military-led transitional government.
The refusal by the opposition to hold discussions with the military on a number of issues and their demand that only the transfer of power would be up for talks is thought to have prompted the AU statement.
However, Omaima Sharif, the head of the delegation of Sudan to the PSC meetings has appealed for more understanding from the organisation in regard to Sudan’s current predicament.
She said that the Sudanese army took power in response to the people’s request and that what the military council did was necessary to prevent bloodshed.
