Ugandan president discusses peace process with Sudanese rebels

Ahmed Tugud Lisan, chief negotiator of the JEM rebel group said that the Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni met with two leaders of Darfur armed groups on Sunday in order to push for the peace process in Sudan.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj yesterday, Tugud said that the Ugandan leader wanted to know the viewpoints of the armed opposition groups during his meeting with leader of the SLM faction Minni Minnawi and JEM leader Jibril Ibrahim in Kampala.

He pointed out that the meeting also discussed the issue of political detainees, noting that Museveni called on his Sudanese counterpart to release them.

Separately, Tugud noted the African Union High Implementation Panel led by Thabo Mbeki has not yet contacted them about the resumption of peace talks.

He accused the Sudanese government of ignoring the African roadmap for peace signed by the opposition groups in Addis Ababa, pointing out that the issues have become more complicated to the African mediator.
