Oil tanker truck explosion injures 50 in Burundi

BUJUMBURA – An oil tanker truck exploded on Tuesday in Burundi’s Karusi province, central Burundi, injuring at least 50 people, the Burundian police said Wednesday.

Burundian Police Spokesman Pierre Nkurikiye said the fuel tanker truck overturned at about 1 p.m. and then exploded when residents came to recover the fuel spilled on the ground .

He said 15 people were in serious condition, adding that they were rushed to Gitega and Karusi hospitals after the explosion.

“It’s regrettable that people are not aware of the danger in case of an accident of an oil tanker truck. They have heard media reports of loss of lives in many countries and very recently in the Democratic Republic of the Congo due to explosions of oil tankers, but unfortunately they don’t realize the danger,” said the spokesperson.
