A woman says she’s heartbroken after being separated from her husband by the conflict in her country.
SOUTH SUDAN – A South Sudanese woman living in Uganda has told Eyewitness News that she’s heartbroken after being separated from her husband by the conflict in her home country.
Juliet Maia last saw the father of her child three years ago while attempting to make the dangerous and often deadly trip to the nearest refugee camp.
With fresh fighting in South Sudan just two months ago, the United Nations says the country has joined Syria, Afghanistan and Somalia in passing the one million refugee mark.
The majority of the recent arrivals have crossed into Uganda.
Maia appears to have accepted her new life here as a refugee and single mother.
She suspects her husband went back to South Sudan to fight in the army.
A visibly emotional Maia says she doesn’t understand how she’s kept sane after all the blood she saw in Juba.
“When you see a member being killed in South Sudan, your heart is not one of forgiveness. You can’t even run much, they were killing people and you’ll jump over dead bodies. Your own sister will be shot in front to you.”
Maia says as long as people continue to cross the border, fearing for their lives, she will never go back to her country.
